10/11 – Monmouth County Warns PSE&G Customers of Phone Scam: Deceptive Calls Demand Payment,

FREEHOLD – The Monmouth County Division of Consumer Affairs is urging residents to be cautious of a telephone scam aimed at PSE&G customers.

PSE&G has asked the county division of consumer affairs to help alert its customers,” said Annmarie Howley, director of consumer affairs. “PSE&G serves the western most portion of the Monmouth County.”

Any customer who has doubts about the legitimacy of a call from PSE&G, especially one that requests payment, should call the utility directly at 1-800-436-7734.

The specific issue is individuals, claiming to be PSE&G employees, are calling PSE&G customers and threatening to shut off gas or electric services if payment is not made that day.

The perpetrators are demanding payment in the form of a prepaid card, which the utility company does not accept. The callers demand that customers make a payment within hours using a Green Dot Money Pak, a type of prepaid card available at pharmacies and convenience stores.

The Monmouth County Division of Consumer Affairs is a law enforcement agency, created and funded by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders that protects against consumer fraud and dishonest and unscrupulous business practices by enforcing the state Consumer Fraud Act and other regulations.
