RED BANK – Open call auditions for Phoenix Productions’ revival of “Shrek” to be presented at The Count Basie Theatre in April, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 12-13, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15. All roles are open and will remain so until the close of auditions.
“Shrek The Musical,” based on the Oscar® winning DreamWorks film that started
it all, brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to dazzling new life on the stage. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a bad guy with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and more than a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero.
Luckily, there’s one on hand – and his name is Shrek.
A large cast of excellent singer-actors, strong comic actors, with wide singing ranges and dance/movement ability are needed. Dancers, who can sing and tap, are a plus. Performers of diverse cultural backgrounds are being sought. Puppet training also is a plus. Fairytale creatures are highly featured, with speaking lines and solo lines in songs.
The Phoenix show will be directed by Rick Joyce with musical direction by Joe Wajda and choreography by Kelly Gemellaro.
Those auditioning should prepare 32 bars of a musical-theater song in the style of the show (contemporary pop, but not from the show. They should also bring clothing suitable for an intense dance audition.
Auditions will be held at the Phoenix Rehearsal Center, 111 Monmouth St.
The first rehearsal will begin in late February. Performances will be at the Count Basie Theatre beginning April 25.
