FREEHOLD – A Monmouth County grand jury indicted a Long Branch man Wednesday for the attempted murder of a man who was shot in Red Bank in April.

The grand jury handed up the four-count indictment charging Anthony Sims Jr., 25, formerly of Red Bank, with attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and second-degree certain persons not to possess weapons, according to Charles Webster, a spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Red Bank police responded to a report at 6:51 p.m. April 9 that gunshots had been fired on Willow Street, according to Webster.

Police found a 28-year-old male victim with multiple gunshot wounds at 13 Willow St. The victim was taken by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Hospital, Neptune, where he received life-saving treatment, Webster said.

A joint investigation, conducted by detectives from Red Bank police and the prosecutor’s office, determined Sims allegedly approached the victim carrying a handgun and fired numerous shots at the victim striking him a number of times before fleeing the scene, Webster said.

Sims was arrested shortly after the incident and has remained incarcerated at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freehold, in lieu of $1 million cash bail.

Authorities are asking anyone with any information to contact Red Bank detective Robert Campanella at 732-530-2719 or detective Brian Weisbrot of the prosecutor’s office at 800-533-7443.
