The Ashley Lauren Foundation, which provides assistance and hope and help to children with cancer and their families, will hold from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, its Let’s Luau summertime fundraiser at the Parmar Estate.

The Ashley Lauren Foundation provides direct family assistance, (household bills, bills and medications not paid through medical insurance, traveling expenses to and from hospitals, funeral expenses, etc.); material assistance (food, clothing, household items); emotional support; parties for the children; advocacy; outings; birthday and holiday gifts for the children; the Making Dreams Come True program and anything else that is needed to make the families’ lives easier and to let each child know that they are important.
The Ashley Lauren Foundation does not fund research but offers support to the families as they cope with the daily battle of pediatric cancer.
The Aslan Youth Ministries is presenting the 13th annual Island Nights featuring Prince Edward Island.
The event will be held from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, at the home of the Van Winkles on 41 Breezy Point.
This year, Aslan is honoring DonnaLyn Giegerich and Tom Zapcic. Giegerich and Zapcic are longtime friends and supporters of Aslan and joined the group on its Haiti trip in 2003.
The evening will consist of hors d’oeuvres, drinks, cuisine, dancing, sailboat rides on the Shrewsbury River, entertainment by Jersey Surecats, and silent and live auctions.
All proceeds go to the Aslan Youth Ministries’ programs for helping urban, at-risk youth transform life’s obstacles into opportunities for success. Tickets are for sale for $125 at the Aslan Youth Ministries’ website at www.aslanyouth.org.
The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd will hold a week of Bible school for children, ages 4 to 10, from Monday, Aug. 6 to Friday, Aug. 10, at the 112 Middletown Road church.
The theme for the week is Listen to the Wind and all the Bible stories the children will be learning this summer has something to do with wind. One of the stories the children will be learning is when Jesus walks on water. In the story it mentions that a strong wind came up.
Class hours are from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The youngsters are split into groups by age, and rotate through four activities, arts and crafts, music, Bible study time and outdoor playtime. The day starts and ends as a whole group and there will be a light snack.
Space is limited to 40 children and space is limited. The cost is $25 for the first child and $15 for each additional sibling. Checks should be made out to Good Shepherd Church. Celebrating The Middletown Township Public Library will host a cupcake-decorating event for teens and tweens on Tuesday, July 17, beginning at 3 p.m.
Teens and tweens, ages 8 and up, are invited to create their very own cupcake art. Registration is required and may be completed by visiting www.mtpl.org or calling 732-671-3700, Ext. 320.
The event will take place in the library’s Community Room at 55 New Monmouth Road. Funding for public programs comes from the Middletown Township Public Library Foundation, Inc.

Community members will soon get the opportunity from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, to refresh their driving skills when Regal Pointe Independent Living hosts the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) one-day Safe Driver Initial Course.
Successful completion of the course can result in discounts on car insurance and the elimination of one point on a driver’s license. The course is available to drivers age 50 years and older who have not yet completed the initial course or who have let three years pass since taking it.
The cost of the course for AARP members, with proof of membership, is $12 per person. The cost for nonmembers is $14 per person. All participants must bring their AARP membership card (if applicable) and valid driver’s license. The event includes lunch, courtesy of Regal Pointe. Seating is limited. The Rumson Garden Club (RGC) awarded its second annual scholarship in memory of Rita Morgan Boyle, a past president and dedicated member of the club and a longtime Rumson resident.
This year, the scholarship was presented to two deserving recipients, Brianna McCarthy and Christopher Seslar.
During an awards ceremony at Rumson-Fair Haven High School on June 11, Robert Boyle Sr., Rita’s husband, presented a $1,500 award to McCarthy, a graduating senior who plans to major in marine biology at the University of Tampa.
Boyle also presented Seslar with a $1,000 scholarship on June 19 at a Rumson Garden Club meeting. Seslar graduated from the Marine Academy of Science and Technology in Highlands, attended Brookdale and will major in marine and environmental studies at Monmouth University.
The scholarships in honor of Rita Morgan Boyle continue a 16-year tradition by the RGC to award a scholarship to a Rumson resident who plans to attend or is attending an accredited college and who has a demonstrated interest in any area of horticulture, landscape design or environmental studies, such as conservation, marine sciences, earth science. The applicant is required to write an essay outlining his or her interests and accomplishments, which may include academic studies or extracurricular activities.
“This is a wonderful living homage to Rita. Both recipients are the future – they seek to carry on Rita’s and the Rumson Garden Club’s commitment to improving the environment on land and sea,” said Christine Hetzler, RGC president.

Monmouth County Historical Association will hold its 37th annual garden party on Sunday, July 15, at a private home in Rumson. This year’s garden party will honor Marie “Rie” Blaisdell for her support of New Jersey history and the Monmouth County community, as well as her commitment to the association. Blaisdell is one of the founders of the garden party and has been on the committee for the last 36 years. She has been a member of Monmouth County Historical Association since 1959 and has served on the board of trustees for several years.
Garden party committee chairwomen Alexandra Delaney, Daren Hutchinson, Vanessa Mulheren, Courtney Trent and Dakota Woodham have been planning this year’s festivities, which include a silent auction, 50/50 cash raffle, and ad journal. There are also sponsorship opportunities available.
Jazz music will be provided by the John Doe Trio and an appearance by President Abraham Lincoln will be presented for the close to 400 guests who attend the event.
Proceeds from the garden party support the historical association’s mission of education and preservation.

Monmouth Reform Temple (MRT) will hold an open house for prospective members to see what the congregation has to offer. There will be a beach Shabbat service open house on Friday, Aug. 10, at Sandy Hook. Those attending are asked to bring their own picnic dinner to the beach at 6 p.m., to be followed by services at 7 p.m. They will be able to meet Rabbi Michelle Pearlman, and Cantor Gabrielle Clissold, speak with congregants and the membership committee, and feel the sacredness of Shabbat by the sea.
