Former New Jersey Devils player Jim Dowd’s Shoot for the Stars Foundation will be holding its 15th Annual Shore High School All-Star Hockey Game at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at the Red Bank Armory in Red Bank.
The game will feature the best high school hockey standouts from Ocean and Monmouth counties.
Tickets for the event are $10 and will be sold at the door. Proceeds will benefit The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. There will be a 50/50 raffle with various NHL signed memorabilia and donated prizes.

The Monmouth Chess School and Club has announced that Grandmaster Nigel Davies, renowned author and teacher, former British Under-21 Chess Champion, British Rapid Play Champion and winner of 15 international competitions, will give a 20-board simultaneous exhibition and lecture starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12.
The participant board fee is $35; observer fee is $25 and does not apply to parents of participants.
In addition, on Saturday, Aug. 11, Davies will give two in-depth instructional clinics: “The Building Blocks of Chess Mastery” from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and “Pattern Recognition, the Openings and Developing Your Chess” from 2 to 5 p.m. The fee for either three-hour clinic is $49.
Both the Saturday and Sunday events will take place at 51 Monmouth St.

The Seniors of Little Silver well be meeting for lunch over the summer on the second Thursday of the month. The group will be meeting at 1 p.m. Aug. 9 at The Turning Point on Prospect Ave., Little Silver.

The Ocean Grove Summer Band will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, outside on the lawn of the Middletown Arts Center (MAC) at 36 Church St.
Attendees are urged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy a free performance of orchestral music presented by this multigenerational band from Ocean Grove, now in its 60th season.
The band is directed by Harry Eichhorn, who formed it in 1953 to offer students a way to keep playing over the summer. Hundreds of people attend the weekly concerts on the Ocean Grove boardwalk and thousands enjoy the band’s performances in the Ocean Grove Great Auditorium. The band’s success over the many years has everything to do with Eichhorn’s dedication and skills as a director, as well as the fact that the concerts include largely familiar compositions in the concert band repertoire.

The Tinton Falls Rotary Club will sponsor the annual Jack Rafter 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Walk on Saturday, Aug. 4.
The race starts at Monmouth Regional High School, 1 Norman J. Field Way. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. The race and walk start at 8:30. Entry fees are $15 for the race and $10 for the walk. Prizes will be awarded for overall winners and seconds, as well as by age group.
All proceeds go to local charities. Prior recipients include Center for Vocational Rehabilitation, The Collier School; ASLAN Youth Ministries, St. Joseph’s Haiti Project, International Clean Water Projects in Lima Peru, Tinton Falls D.A.R.E. and Tinton Falls First Aid Department.

Family & Children’s Service, Monmouth County’s oldest non-profit social service agency, is seeking donations for its annual Reading Buddies Backpack Project which provides new backpacks filled with much-needed school supplies to elementary school students in underserved communities throughout Monmouth County.
Administered through FCS’s Retired and Senior Volunteers Program (RSVP), the backpack project attempts to level the playing field for those children whose families may not be able to afford new school supplies. Last year, the backpack project fulfilled requests for more than 600 free backpacks for local school children, thanks to the generous donations of dozens of local businesses and organizations.
“Imagine you are the student who comes to school the first day hoping no one will notice that you don’t have a backpack or essential supplies? Would you be able to concentrate on learning?” FCS Manager of Volunteer Services Samantha White asks. “We want every child to start off the year right; to have the confidence and enthusiasm they need to learn and to grow. Giving them the tools and supplies to learn is part of that process.”
In addition to new backpacks, the agency is seeking donations of new pens and pencils, crayons, washable markers, blunt scissors, two-pocket folders, rulers, pencil cases and boxes, pencil sharpeners and erasers, glue sticks and wide-rule notebooks. Donations may be dropped off through Friday, Aug. 17, in Long Branch at FCS’s offices at 191 Bath Ave., or at its Thrift Boutique at 307 Branchport Ave.

Organizers are getting ready for the annual Canterbury Art Show at St. George’s-by-the-River, 7 Lincoln Ave.
The three-day art show runs September 14-16. The Canterbury Art Show will have an exhibition and sale of juried artwork, non-juried artwork and portfolio pieces from 70 artists in oils, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, watercolor, mixed-media and photography.
All artwork is original and priced to sell. There will be something for everyone’s style, budget, wall or desk-top.
Proceeds from the show will directly benefit the operating costs of St. George’s and its many outreach programs.
