High School Sports Events Postponed

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA), the governing body of high school sports in the state, has postponed the high school schedule by one week in light of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The cutoffs for qualifying for state playoff games in football has been extended one week with first round games beginning the weekend of Nov. 16-17. The semifinals will be Nov. 30 – Dec. 1, and the championships are scheduled for the Dec. 7-8 weekend.

High schools not significantly effected by the storm could elect to play this weekend’s games on schedule if both schools agree, according to the NJSIAA.

According to individual Two River-area school schedules, Red Bank Catholic has postponed its football game against Monmouth Regional, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2, until next Friday, Nov. 9. The Middletown South/Colts Neck football game, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, at Colts Neck High School, has been postponed until Nov. 10. The Rumson-Fair Haven game at Manasquan, initially set for Saturday, Nov. 3, has been rescheduled for next Saturday, Nov.10. Thanksgiving weekend remains open on the schedule if schools elect to hold their traditional Thanksgiving football matchups.

All scheduling, however, is tentative because many school districts have canceled school for indefinite periods of time. The Middletown Township school district has closed school until Nov. 13, according to Middletown Mayor Anthony Fiore. Many schools have policies that, if schools are not in session, there are no after-school activities.

The boys’ and girls’ state soccer playoffs were set to begin last Monday and Tuesday, during the height of the storm and its immediate aftermath, but were obviously not played. The boys’ state soccer tournament is scheduled to begin on Nov. 5, 7 and 9, with public sectional finals played on Nov. 12. The boys’ non-public final is scheduled to be played on Nov. 14. The girls’ tournament is scheduled to begin on Nov. 6, 8,, and 10, with public sectional finals on Nov.13. The non-public final is scheduled to be played on Nov.15.  Field hockey quarterfinals are scheduled for Nov. 5-6h and the semifinals for Nov. 7-8. But, all scheduling is tentative.

Additionally, all Monmouth University sporting events scheduled for this weekend have been postponed and the university will remain closed until Monday, Nov. 5.
