FAIR HAVEN – Budding runners are gearing up for the Junior League of Monmouth County’s Girls on the Run 5k to be held June 8 at the Fair Haven Fields.
Open to girls in grades 3-8, the Girls on the Run program teaches girls more than just running skills. Through conversation-based life lessons, games and training, the 10-week program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete the 5k running event.
“The skills the girls learn during Girls on The Run apply to every aspect of their lives, not just running,” says JLMC’s Lauren Porter, who runs this year’s program. “At each practice, we talk about important life skills like self-confidence, nutrition, and team work. It is amazing to watch the girls learn to set and achieve goals, whether it be a short-term goal – five laps around Fair Haven Fields during practice – or a long-term goal, like the 5k we will all run together on June 8. The life skills they are learning will empower them to become strong confident young women.”
Programs like this one that help young girls to become confident women are just one part of the JLMC mission. For more information on its programs, visit www.jlmc.org.
The JLMC also is holding its 75th Jubilee Celebration on Saturday, May 31, at Beacon Hill Country Club, Atlantic Highlands. For tickets or more information, visit the JLMC website listed above.
