The Rutgers Master Gardeners of Monmouth County will present a workshop. entitled Annual Flowers: What Grows Best in N.J., from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 1, at the Monmouth County Connection, 3544 State Highway 66, Neptune.

“Starting a garden can seem like a daunting task, but also an exciting and rewarding adventure,” says presenter Cheryl Grant.

During the workshop beginning gardeners will receive the information they need to plant a garden of their own.

H&Gsunflower-IMG_4479“I will describe a wide variety of annual plants and provide basic descriptions of these plants, planting and growing information and tips for use,” Grant says. “And, seasoned gardeners will enjoy the pictures highlighting annual flowers and their decorative foliage providing splashes of color around immature trees, shrubs and perennials.”

The program will also discuss the difference between annuals and perennials; types of annual flowers; the importance of well-prepared soil; planting tips; and the best annual flowers for the Garden State.

Gardening has been Grant’s lifelong pursuit since her father gave her a small plot and a package of carrot seeds. Her special interest is the use of annual flowers in the vegetable garden for pest management. She lives and gardens in Matawan and Woodbourne, N.Y. A Master Gardener since 2011, Cheryl is a dynamic speaker adding historical detail, personal stories and photos to each presentation.

The workshop is free and open to all Monmouth County residents, but registration is required and may be completed by calling 732-303-2828.
