LITTLE SILVER – Gerry Deverin was always there when his hometown of Little Silver needed him. When the town’s recreation committee initiated a new lacrosse program five years ago, Deverin was one of the first volunteers to step up and help coach and organize the program. Now Little Silver will remember Deverin, who died in March, for his dedication.
Little Silver men’s softball teams will honor Deverin by hosting the annual Softball One Pitch Tournament, beginning at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, at the borough’s fields. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 22.
This is the 13th anniversary of the community event that will benefit the Deverin Family. Gerry’s wife Lori and their children, Peter, Ryan and Kathleen will be on hand for the “first pitch” opening ceremony which is designed to honor Deverin and show the family the Little Silver community’s support. Softball teams from surrounding towns will participate in the tournament along with six Little Silver teams. Local DJ’s, The East Side Princes, will add to the festive atmosphere. Grilled chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, lemonade and Ralph’s Italian Ices will be served. Children’s activities are planned. All are welcome to attend.
Deverin’s memory was honored during the August Borough Council meeting when the Gerry Deverin Spirit Award was presented to Aidan Lynch and Annabel Martin, two outstanding lacrosse players who demonstrated the character, dedication and team leadership exemplified by Deverin. More than 60 friends and Deverin family members attended the presentation by lacrosse commissioners Dave Ballard and Kathleen Hoffman who reminded everyone of Deverin’s commitment to youth sports and the contributions made by the recipients.
