Published on January 24, 2014 with No Comments

RUMSON – Monmouth County Historical Association will hold its 115th Annual Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the Rumson Country Club, 163 Rumson Road.

Members of the association and the general public are invited to arrive between 6 and 6:30 p.m. A brief business meeting will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a program, “Sojourner Truth: Ain’t I a Woman?”

Admission is free but reservations are requested.

Sojourner Truth will be portrayed by Daisy Century, who recalls the thrill of receiving a standing ovation for her third grade recitation of The Creation, and credits this as the beginning of her desire to perform. Trained as a teacher, Century holds a master’s in science education and a Ph.D. from Temple University, also in science education.

Century is a published author, writing under the name Emily Nelson, and is also an accomplished singer.

Sojourner Truth, born Isabelle Baumfree, was a slave from a small town north of New York City. Sometime after gaining her freedom in 1827, she became a well-known anti-slavery speaker. In 1850 she began speaking on women’s suffrage. Her most quoted speech, “Ain’t I a Woman?” was delivered in 1851 at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention, in Akron, Ohio. Truth visited New Jersey in 1864, and toured the state giving lectures and speeches from 1869 through 1874.

Refreshments will be served.

Additional information and reservations are available by calling 732-462-1466, ext. 19.

The historical association’s museum in Freehold is currently featuring “Farm: Agriculture in Monmouth County 1600 – 2013,” an exhibition that explores the history of farming and agriculture in Monmouth County. Another exhibition, “Properly Dressed: Art and Reality in 18th- and Early 19th- Century Dress in Monmouth” will be on view from Feb. 2 through Aug. 31.
