Monmouth Symphony Presents Young Artists In Concert

The Monmouth Symphony orchestra will present a program of classical music by young composers and introduce a young violinist on Sunday, April 1, 3 p.m. at the Count Basie Theatre, 99 Monmouth St., Red Bank.

The program, conducted by Roy Gussman, will include the popular “Italian” Symphony (1833) of Felix Mendelssohn, his fourth symphony, written when he was 24 years old. Fourteen-year-old soloist Soyeong Park will perform the Violin Concerto of Alexander Glazunov, one of his most popular compositions. The opening selection will be a lyrical tone poem for trumpet and orchestra titled “In Memoriam,” by 16-year old composer Matthew Liu.

Host Tom Avakian will interview Park and Liu in the prior to the concert at 2:15 pm.

Soyeong Park

Park began playing the violin at age 4, and debuted with the Philadelphia Orchestra as a winner of the 2009 Albert M. Greenfield Competition children’s division.  In addition to the Monmouth Symphony young artist competition, she has claimed first prizes in numerous other competitions. She is a freshman at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North.

Matthew Liu

Liu has been arranging and composing since age 12 and began formal composition study at the age of 14. He attends Marlboro High School as a sophomore. His symphonic work “In Memoriam” was premiered in the spring of 2011 by the NJ State Youth Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall.  His works have also been performed at Carnegie Hall, the Great Auditorium at Ocean Grove, and at Vince Parrini Auditorium. An experienced violinist, Liu is concertmaster of Marlboro High School’s orchestras and assistant concertmaster of the Bravura Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
