HOLMDEL – The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd will hold a free concert at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6, featuring the New Jersey State Orchestra (NJSYO).

The two groups that will perform are: the concert youth orchestra with 36 children who are in fifth grade and older; and the preparatory string orchestra with eight children who are in second grade and older.

The concert is free and open to the public. Attendees will be encouraged to participate in a freewill offering that will be donated to the World Hunger 100 Wells program to provide clean and safe water for impoverished areas throughout the world.

The concert youth group, led by Leo Soeda, will play: John Williams’ The Imperial March from Star Wars; Mozart’s Rondo alla Turca; Gounod’s Funeral March for a Marionette; and Jessel’s Parade for Wooden Soldiers.

The preparatory string orchestra, led by Katie Gussman, will play: Allegro from Concerto for Two Trumpets by Vivaldi, arranged by Joseph Phillips; Desert Sands by Soon Hee Newbold; Country Wedding Dance by Bedrich Smetana, arranged by Michael Storey; and Gavotte by Arcangelo Corelli, arranged by Bob Phillips.

After the concert, light refreshments, provided by the NJSYO, will be served.

The New Jersey State Youth Orchestra is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization and a New Jersey registered charity. NJSYO is operated by volunteers for the purpose of providing musical education to youth. Currently, there are approximately 175 students who are grouped into three orchestras by age and ability.

NJSYO also offers a chamber music group to provide young musicians the opportunity to perform in smaller camps, and a “Learn to Play” program for beginners on select instruments.

The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd is located at 112 Middletown Road.
