TOMS RIVER – St. John Vianney erased a 2-0 deficit to defeat Immaculate Heart Academy, 4-2, deficit in Sunday’s Non-Public, Group A softball final at Toms River High School North.
After falling behind in the first inning, Lancers junior pitcher Kate Beriont settled into a groove. She allowed those two runs on four hits and four walks. She struck out 12 batters in the championship win. Beriont allowed just two hits after the first inning.
St. John Vianney junior catcher Kate Baron socked a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning to bring the Lady Lancers within a run at 2-1. Later in the inning, sophomore second baseman Erica Krumbine scored on a throwing error at third base on an attempted sacrifice bunt to tie the game.
The Lancers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore left fielder Claire Stefanelli singled home a run and they added to that lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman designated hitter Helena Coppola plated senior center fielder Amanda Durham with a sacrifice fly to left field.
St. John Vianney rallied for the win after being unable to do the same in the Shore Conference Tournament final against Toms River East on Thursday. The Lady Lancers fell behind in that game in the first inning and never rebounded. They had little problem rebounding against Immaculate Heart Academy.
