Veterans Day is today, Monday, Nov. 11.
It is the day when Americans salute those who have served in this nation’s armed forces. The day has its roots in Armistice Day, declared in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson, to commemorate the end of major fighting during World War I which occurred with an armistice with Germany on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
Federal, state, county and municipal offices are closed. Most banks also are closed.
