MIDDLETOWN – The Mayor and Township Committee made a special presentation at the October meeting to thank everyone who helped the community commemorate the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy.
The Middletown 9/11 Memorial committee was established early in the year to plan activities that would appropriately commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy. The results of their efforts included three tributes to honor the 37 residents who died in the World Trade Center attacks. The Middletown 9/11 Memorial Committee raised more than $25,000 for a flag banner display along Kings Highway, Church Street and Middletown Lincroft Road. Thanks to the overwhelming support of the community approximately 80 banners were placed on display, said Mayor Anthony P. Fiore, who chaired the committee.
Under the direction of Arts Center Director Maggie O’Brien, a special art exhibit honoring 9/11 was organized and put on display in the gallery from August 25th through September 25th. The Middletown Arts Center opened their doors and invited the community to participate in hands-on activities and view the exhibit on Sept. 11th. The committee also brought the community together on Sept. 11th with a memorial service. “Many community leaders joined us on that solemn day including members of the clergy, local government officials, local civic and fraternal groups, Middletown Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, emergency responders and thousands of friends and neighbors,” he said.
